Discover Britain - Prehistoric and Natural Sites
The best known of megalithic sites. Stonehenge stands in splendid isolation on Salisbury plain, Wiltshire. The tallest stone is 7 m high and construction is believed to have been started around 3000 BC and completed 1000 years later. So it really was something of a long-term project! Believe it or not, some of the stones were moved from the Preselli Mountains in Wales by river and land to take their place in this monument. This is a very popular tourist destination, so is best visited either early morning or early evening to avoid the crowds. If you'd like to know more about Stonehenge, click here.
